Machinery, Fabrication, Metal Bending
Fabricators use specialized machines and tools to stamp, cut, and bend sheet metal. These machines help produce components such as equipment attachments, car parts, gutters, appliances, and more. Read on to learn more about some of the heavy-duty machines used in metal fabrication.
Computer numerical control (CNC) machines use coded instructions from a computer to cut metal and other materials, such as wood, plastic, and high-density foam. The device typically uses a mounted router as a cutting tool.
The computer’s software transforms numerical code into instructions. The routing machine then works with high accuracy to punch, cut, or stamp the sheet metal.
A press brake is another machine used in metal fabrication, typically to bend sheet metal. The sides of a press brake are usually C-frames with a table at the bottom and a movable beam at the top. The bottom tool, a die, is mounted on the table and the top tool, a punch, is mounted on the upper beam.
The press brake lowers the punch onto the sheet metal and presses it into the die to form the desired shape. Dies come in many designs; V-dies are the most common type and come in various sizes. Fabricators choose optimal V-dies depending on the workpieces’ resistance to bending.
A plate rolling machine rolls sheet metal into a round or conical shape. Fabricators typically direct newer plate rolling machines with CNC controllers.
Rolling machines with three or four rollers can create many types of outputs. Three-roller machines have two side rolls and one top roll. The side rolls move horizontally, and the top roll moves vertically.
Four-roller machines have two side rolls, one top roll, and one pinching roll. With this machine, the side rolls bend the metal, and the pinching roll holds the plate.
